IFC’s horror movie The Rental came in a little lighter than expected but still was big enough to remain atop the pandemic-impacted weekend box office for a second week. The distributor reported a three-day gross of $290,300, down 28% from its first frame. Dave Franco’s feature directorial debut saw its biggest day Friday with $110,300, dipping to $109,800 on Saturday and $70,200 on Sunday. Catalog titles filled out the rest of the top 10 (see the chart below).

As the European Film Market gets underway in Berlin, here’s a last minute project that should stir some buyer interest. Liam Neeson will lead the cast of Memory, an action thriller from Casino Royale director Martin Campbell. Pic is based on the 2003 Dutch film The Memory Of A Killer, Dario Scardapane (The Bridge) has written the screenplay for the English-language version.

STX, Black Bear Pictures, Elevation Form Distribution Partnership

STX Entertainment, Black Bear Pictures and Canadian distributor Elevation Pictures have unveiled a strategic distribution partnership. The agreement was announced Wednesday at the Berlin Film Festival and includes an exclusive output deal for STXinternational to sell and distribute all Black Bear productions internationally. Elevation Pictures, in which Black Bear is a major investor, will distribute all STX productions in Canada.

Sony Pictures Classics, Stage 6 Films Team On ‘I Carry You With Me’ Out of Sundance

Sony Pictures Classics has teamed with Sony’s Stage 6 Films to oversee the global release of Heidi Ewing’s feature narrative debut, “I Carry You With Me” (Te Llevo Conmigo),” a gay love story about two men who immigrate to the United States. The deal follows the movie’s enthusiastic reception at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The romantic drama debuted to multiple standing ovations in Park City, where it was shown in the NEXT section. It will be released later this year.

Toronto Title ‘The Friend’ Lands At Roadside Attractions And Gravitas Ventures, Will Hit Theaters In Fall

Roadside Attractions and Gravitas Ventures are teaming on the U.S. distribution The Friend, the Gabriela Cowperthwaite-directed drama starring Jason Segel, Dakota Johnson and Casey Affleck that world premiered at Toronto. The pic is based on Matthew Teague’s autobiographical essay published in Esquire. The companies are now eyeing a fall 2020 theatrical release.

Alison Brie, Dan Stevens To Star In Dave Franco Directing Debut ‘The Rental’

Dave Franco is set to make his directing debut with the horror thriller The Rental, and Alison Brie and Dan Stevens will star with Sheila Vand and Jeremy Allen White. The film will be fully financed by Black Bear Pictures, which is producing along with Franco’s Ramona Films. Shooting begins April in Oregon.
